Sometimes taking roads to save time can bring unexpected surprises. Here is a drive that few are fortunate to see. Very pleasant drive, with many back unpaved roads, thru the mountains and valleys.

John`s Recollections
Trying to save time, we went off the beaten path, but in the end spent much more time as many stops were made along the way to view the beautiful scenery. For those that may wish to follow a similar route, I`ll try to provide a recap from the park itself. Hwy 34 south to Hwy 40 intersection, west to Kremming, Hwy 9 south for 2-3 miles to a dirt road (Trough road) and go west to Hwy 131, then south to meet Interstate 70 at Wolcott.
Certainly there are better roads, but likely not as exciting or scenic.

Mountain bypass road, Trough Road (with Gore Canyon)
This mountain bypass from Rocky Mountain National Park to Interstate 70 provided much more scenery than expected. On Trough road one passes thru Gore Canyon and along the upper reaches of the Colorado River. The river here was quite famous for white water rafting and Inspiration Point has some spectacular views of the Canyon.
