New River Trail

Galax, Virginia


New River Trail traverses the New river in Virginia. For more detail visit this web site here.
This bike/walking trail is well maintained and the scenery is quite good. The portion of the trail that I travelled (Galax - Fries) had excellent rest stops and both junctions enabled one to have beverages and food. I would not hesitate on returning and complete the northern portion from Fries Junction.

Many small creeks in this area with mostly flat terrain. Quite pleasant biking.

New River & Junction to Fries

John`s Recollections

Rail tunnel now used as part of bike path, followed by major bridge crossing the New River. The old Fries Junction stop on the north side of river now provides an excellent rest stop prior to the gradual climb to the town Fries.

Biking to Fries is always on an uphill climb. although gradual, it does mean more stops to look at the river scenery.

New River view - guite scenic New River view - notice the many boulders New River view - the rapids New River view - calmer waters Bike path along the river Fries - excellent facilities
